4th of July Fund Raiser for Troop 586
Our 4th of July Fund Raiser is not
just to make money for the troop, although it started out that way.
In the beginning we were looking for a way to earn some money........
We now look at it as a public relations tool for the troop, Scouting and for
the church. As we
let people in to use the restrooms, they can view the church and see the bulletin boards and the rooms.
If they don't have a church home,
they may decide to visit the church.
Many times the boys are asked questions about the troop and Scouting.
This is also used as a service project to our chartering organization, Christ
United Methodist Church.
The church parking lot and lawn has long been a popular spot to watch the
fireworks. In the past, the
lawn has been littered with pop cans, pizza boxes, napkins, empty cups and so on. The trustees of the
church would either clean up the lawn
after the fireworks or come early the next morning to clean everything up.
When we were granted permission to hold the "fundraiser" on July 4th, the
condition was that we clean
up the parking lots and lawn
afterwards.
So, if you look at the money raised and think about the work that went into the
"fundraiser", please
remember the other "benefits" also.
By the way, this is another reason for the car wash also. We don't usually make
a lot of money at the car
wash, but the PR is priceless.
These two events may plant little seeds that will grow into something great.
In this world of activities that compete for our youth's attention, we need to
market our "product", a product
that has been producing strong Americans for the future of our country for 100 years!
